The Plough and the Stars is about a group of Irish citizens living in tenement houses in Dublin during WWI. They struggle to survive and find their indepenance.
Every design process starts with research into the period. I look for pictures documents written in the time, telling me of the peoples state of living and traditions amoung the citizens. Though these characters lived in poverty they were not in dirty rages, it was a daily routine for the women of the house to repair and clean the families clothes.
Secondly I have found it helpful to look at pictures and catelogs to see what is fashionable for the time.
Once I have compiled my images for each character to refer to I meet the director to really listen to his discriptive words when discribing each character. From there I can finalize each design by asking myself, "does this design convey "DARK", "CROW", or SHROUDED".
